Artist Statement
In my artwork my goal is to produce dynamic compositions that evolve from the use of line and abstract patterns. I am captivated by the contrast between black and white, and I enjoy looking for repeating shapes and textures.
My medium of choice has been 35mm black and white film photography. Film photography is different from other photography. My favorite part is the developing process in the darkroom, especially seeing the image appear in the developing tray, as if by magic.
The linear paintings on canvas were made using a makeshift pendulum resulting in a composition that resembles the same outcome from a spirograph I had when I was a child. Unlike film photography, with which I control every aspect of my work – from subject selection to the final printed image – as soon as I let go of the paint pendulum, I turn over the creative process to the forces of gravity and motion.
The feeling of excitement in watching the painting develop, however, is similar to the feeling of anticipation that I experience in the darkroom in seeing a latent image become reality. In painting, as in photography, I work with lines, angles, and shapes. Recently I have begun exploring the use of color as well.
